
Vilnius City Municipality will start work on the management of the area at Morta and Švitrigaila Streets this spring. It will host a firefighter-themed St. Florion Square, which got its name because of the Fire Protection and Rescue Department located in the neighborhood - St. Florian is considered the patron saint of firefighters. UAB “Gerbūvio projektai” won the public tender for contract services organized by the Vilnius Development Company managing the project to equip the space.
The area of 0.5 hectares in the New Town is currently poorly used, without a clear purpose. After completing the contract work, children, sports lovers and curious passers-by will be able to spend a lot of time in it. A portion of nearby Morta Street from Shvitrigaila Street to T. Shevchenko streets.
“We strive to make each space of the city not only a place of rest and communication for residents, but also to convey the unique spirit of the district, the neighborhood, be distinctive. St. The Florijon Square project is part of this ambition, which will significantly contribute to the improvement of the territory and improve life in the New Town,” says Vilnius Mayor Valdas Benkunskas.
The project includes the installation of walking paths, small architectural elements, children's play, sports and recreation areas.
“By developing this project, we are contributing to the mission of creating a city that is good for people of all ages to live in. St. In Florijon Square there will be areas for passive recreation, children's play and active activities with sports equipment, and visitors will have a better understanding of how various firefighters' equipment works,” says Laura Joffė, head of the Vilnius Development Company supervising the contract project.
Lithuania does not yet have a public space dedicated to firefighters, so the neighborhood of the square dictated the concept of its installation. Information and educational activities will be carried out on the landscaped territory, visitors will get acquainted with the work of firefighters: smoke detectors, a layout of the pump department of a fire truck, fire extinguishers, hydrants and the emergency services number 112.
Slides and other facilities for the children's playground will be made in accordance with the colors of the equipment used by firefighters. The emblem of the Department of Fire Protection and Rescue will be immortalized on its cover. In the public area there will be stands with textual information, which will be presented in Braille and accessible via QR codes.
The architectural solutions of the square aim to make the managed area more attractive by means of both landforming and additional planting: this will functionally and visually separate the zones, making the distinction between the driveway and the newly formed areas. When managing the territory, intensive landscaping of it is envisaged.
The value of the contract for contract works is about 1.1 million. Eur incl. VAT. The work is planned to be completed by the summer of 2026.
The contract works will start this quarter also in the squares near Pelesa — Liepkalnis streets and between J. Rutkausko Street and Pilaitė Avenue. In 2025, it is planned to start managing Žirmūnai Square and public spaces at the Millennium — S. Darius and S. Girėnas streets and Maumedų street. Last year, Vilnius was intensively managed and newly equipped public spaces. During the year, 19 public spaces were renovated.
